West Fourth Street Basketball League Sizzles

The West Fourth Street Basketball League started off Summer 2010 in the midst of a blazing heat wave. But that didn’t slow down the young women pounding down the courts (and drinking plenty of water). With several new sponsors this year, along with several loyal long-time sponsors, the League is off to a sizzling start. Come check out a game any weekday between 10 and 2 at the corner of W 3rd St and 6th Ave!

Jeanne Marie Otter Memorial Scholarships Awarded

At I.C.E. graduation on Wednesday, two outstanding seniors were awarded the Jeanne Marie Otter Memorial Scholarships of $500 each: Sophia Goldberg, who will be attending the State University of New York at Binghamton in the fall, and Lend Anadolli, who will be attending the State University of New York at Oneonta.

The Jeanne Marie Otter Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 by the family of Jeanne Otter, a long-time GVYC administrator who helped develop our entire program, and who deserves much of the credit for creating the JOY Center. Jeanne joined John Pettinato at the Greenwich Village Youth Council program around 1974 and helped to build it into a multifaceted youth program, including more social services and the arts.

In 1995, The Greenwich Village Youth Council refined the criteria for receiving the awards to those youth who have participated in at least two athletic leagues; participated in at least two arts programs; participated in at least one counseling or educational program or workshop; attended school during the entire year or obtained a similarly constructive work or life experience; and, shown improvement in at least two issue areas, such as school performance, career awareness, cultural competence or understanding, peer counseling, self esteem building, etc.; developed at least two positive peer or adult role model relationships.

JOY Summer Camp open for registration

Our free summer camp and field trip program at the Jeanne Otter Youth Center is once again open for sign-up. We’ll be offering Field Trips, Swimming, Arts/Recreation, Sports, and daily Snack and Lunch for children ages 5-13 at our Eldridge Street location, from July 12 – August 20, M-F, 10 to 4. If you know a child who might benefit from our program, please call (212) 979-2442.
