ICE Afterschool

The Greenwich Village Youth Council runs the extensive after-school enrichment program at the Institute of Collaborative Education (I.C.E.), a 6-12 grade public school that grew out of GVYC’s mission and the needs of its members. Our program provides an array of academic, arts, social, and homework help services.

I.C.E. is a unique, progressive, and rigorous learning community. Serving students from 6th through 12th grades, I.C.E.’s close-knit community offers support for students as they navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of adolescence — and sends almost 100% of them to college. The talented staff at I.C.E. is deeply committed to the growth of its children. And I.C.E. is committed to and depends on collaboration with its community.

Our after school program at I.C.E. meets every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Teachers and tutors offer academic support in every subject on each of these days.

Teachers and volunteers run a variety of activities based on student interest. (Some of these clubs meet at lunchtime as well or instead of after school).

  • We have just launched three new after-school activities for Spring 2010: a Yoga program, Gardening Club, and Knitting Club.

In addition, we continue to offer:

  • Media: Literary Magazine (“Deeds”), Town Meeting, Youth Media, Adobe Youth Voices

  • Musical Production Project (all written/composed/performed by students), Dance, Set Design Workshop, Art Club, MS and HS Jazz Band
  • Academic: MS and HS Debate, Brain Bee, Mathletes, Chemistry Club
  • Sports: Basketball (6th grade boys, MS girls, MS boys, JV boys, varsity girls, varsity boys), baseball, flag football, soccer, softball, MS track
  • Other: Young Women’s Leadership, Big Sibs/Little Sibs
  • In planning stages: After-School Drop-in Center
  • We also arrange and sponsor trips, including: Habitat for Humanity, Ice skating, Foreign service learning, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Young Women’s Leadership Retreat

Every year we also have several NYU social work interns who provide counseling. In addition, the principal and AP at I.C.E. are social workers and provide counseling.
